ADHD & the Fear of Being Too Much
ADHD & the Fear of Being Too Much ….
I’ve always felt like I needed to hold myself back.
Afraid of being too much for others.
Afraid that my overwhelming energy might push people away.
I’ve often been told that I talk too much.
That I should just be quiet for once.
Give me a stage and a topic I’m passionate about, and I can talk for hours.
I’ve also frequently been asked if I could lower my voice.
I have a present, resonant voice—one that often lets the neighbors enjoy my conversations whether they want to or not.
Sometimes it was the person I was speaking to who asked—out of consideration for the neighbors.
But often, it was the neighbors themselves who complained, annoyed that they could hear every word.
We live in a world where we’ve been programmed not to be too much.
We’ve been taught to constantly adjust ourselves to the people around us—
to avoid being irritating, to be accepted.
But I’ve discovered something different:
That constant adjusting? That’s not the point.
We weren’t given ADHD—or this overwhelming energy—by mistake.
It’s not a flaw.
It’s a powerful gift.
We are not meant to slam the brakes on our energy just because we’re afraid of being too much.
Here’s how I see it now:
The energy I think is “too much” is exactly what the other person needs from me.
That powerful energy acts like a crowbar in the system we live in—
a system we all feel deep down isn’t right.
But most people are too afraid to step out of it,
so they stay in line.
But most people are too afraid to step out of it,
so they stay in line.
They play nice.
They keep themselves small.
Tamed.
Acceptable.
Making sure no one can disapprove.
We’re afraid of disruption,
afraid to lose our comfortable lives—
even if we’re living a programmed life that doesn’t make us happy.
The abundant energy that comes with ADHD is exactly the kind of force that can pry this system open.
A system that tells us we need to be controlled.
But people like you—those with “too much” energy—
are being invited to stir things up.
To shake the system.
To pull it out of its comfort zone.
That’s what you can do with the energy you’ve been taught to suppress.
It’s not too much.
It’s exactly what’s needed.
Your authenticity is what the world is truly asking for.
People who aren’t afraid to wake others up.
